Portraiture

Create an image similar in nature to the Arnolfini wedding portrait. Every detail must act symbolically to enhance our understanding of the subject and recast their personality as it relates to universal myths. The image should add to our understanding of the role of this individual in society (where do they fit in, what is worth knowing about them). I recommend photographing someone you know well in order to avoid cliches and show us something truly contemporary. The background is as important as the foreground of your image. You will be evaluated on how well each detail upholds the symbolism of the whole.

IN CLASS: Make an initial sketch in class of a loose plan for your image.

DUE NEXT WEEK: finished portrait. Should be a planned image rather than a purely candid image. Please take time with setup and lighting. Also consider shooting objects separately and compositing. Photographs must be at least 8 x 10, but this is a minimum. Please consider the appropriate size for your image.

NOTE: as usual you will be graded on content and craft. Your final image must use appropriate lighting and color correction.
